A new report documents the rise of AI-generated images used to fuel Islamophobic content in India. The report, published by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH), examines how emerging AI tools are being used to create images to spread disinformation and incite violence against Muslims.

The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) text-to-image technology has created challenges globally, with bad actors across countries using it to spread disinformation and fuel hatred, especially targeting minority groups. 

While the use of various AI tools and the subsequent use of AI-generated images have skyrocketed, their role in shaping online discourse has remained unexplored. Recent studies have flagged the divisive role of social media in India, but the role of AI-generated images has not yet been analysed.

Nabiya Khan, co-researcher of the report, shares that she saw the influx of Islamophobic content in the Indian social media space as both “a symptom and an amplifier of the risks of AI’s rise.” 

“These tools made old prejudices scalable, faster, cheaper, and harder to trace. That’s what pushed us to document it.” Khan told Maktoob.
