SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — After two teenage gunmen killed three people at the Islamic Center of San Diego Monday, the Muslim community in San Diego is raising the question of whether religious centers need increased security.
The two suspects, identified by the FBI as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, opened fire at the Islamic Center, killing Mansour Kaziha, Nader Awad and Amin Abdullah, before driving away and allegedly shooting at a gardener.
According to the Center for the Study of Organized Hate, since the start of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran at the end of February, Islamophobic content on the social media platform X saw a sharp increase. From Feb 28 to March 5, the center said it recorded 279,417 posts targeting Muslims.
In the aftermath of the shooting being investigated by the FBI as a hate crime, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has said it is increasing patrols at houses of worship throughout its jurisdiction, but did not specify for how long.
