NEW YORK — As the country absorbed Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral win Tuesday night, some high-profile social media users rushed to mourn what they characterized as the destruction of America.
“New York City has fallen,” Rep. Randy Fine (R-Florida) said in a post on X. “America is next if we don’t stop it.”
Content painting Mamdani as a dangerous extremist has gained traction online, according to a report from the Center for the Study of Organized Hate. In an analysis of X posts about Mamdani between June 24 and Oct. 31, the organization says it found 35,522 original posts containing Islamophobic or xenophobic attacks authored by 17,752 unique accounts. Following his win, many online reactions from conservative figures referenced political violence, mandatory hijabs or terrorism.
